Inspiration Thursday (aka Inspiration Wednesday): Opening Day!

So the office has been totally busy with new Spring and Summer arrivals. We're having a spectacular prom season and we're getting ready to enter the busiest month of the year for us! With that said we have to admit that we lost track of time this week and we totally missed our Inspiration Wednesday post! This post is one of our weekly favs so we just had to do it! We'll be back to our normal Wednesday posting next week and if we're not then you are welcomed to remind us.

This week's inspiration post comes courtesy of the fantabulous weather we've been having here in Cali. This weather has arrived just in time for the opening day of America's favorite past time: baseball! While we claim no allegiance to any specific team we do admit to loving the game and the food.
Our outfit is inspired by both the colors of the MLB. We love that this outfit is easy, comfy, and stylish! Rompers are definitely a must have for Spring and Summer. This navy romper is both easy and airy so you don't have to worry about running to hot if you're out in the sun. We added a fedora for sun safety along with a boho bead bracelet, a pair of gold hoops, a cute woven bag and simple gladiator sandals and now we're all set to sing "Take me out to the ball game" with the best of 'em.

What do you think? Is this outfit a good choice for a game?

Must Read Monday: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Let's get this out of the way. If you haven't noticed, I'm a sucker for a cute romance story. Don't get me wrong, when it comes to books I don't discriminate. I love reading regardless and genre has little to no influence on me. If a book catches my eye because of a great summary or even a great cover (see previous Must Read Monday post for more on my scientific way of choosing books based on covers) I'm going to pick it up because I never know what little bit of knowledge will come from it.
With that said, I am also someone that tries to time my reading material to the what's going on in life. Case in point, I know Spring break is around the corner or here for some people and therefore I don't find it necessary to read something utterly morbid. In fact, I almost make sure that whatever books I pick out for vacay are fun and uplifting (yep books can make you smile). When I came across Anna and the French Kiss it looked very promising. After I read it I guarantee you that this book is one of those aforementioned smiley-books.
What It's About:
Anna Oliphant is just your average teenager living her happy little life in her normal little town and working at your average movie theater. As an average girl she ,of course, has the not so average crush on one of her coworkers. Just as things start looking up with said coworker her dad decides she needs to get some culture. How does he think she should get this culture? Well, by sending her to Paris to spend a year abroad of course. Now don't get me wrong, you'd have to be beyond insane to not want to go to Paris so you're probably thinking that Anna is beyond lucky right?
Sadly, that is not how Anna see's it. She see's it as the end of the world (Anna has a flair for the dramatic).
She ends up going to Paris and she starts high school with a bunch of different students including a very cute and very unavailable guy names Etienne St. Clair (love his name btw!). Since this guy is unavailable and she's still crushing on cute guy from home, Anna ends up becoming St. Clair's best friend and the story takes off from there.

Why You Should Read It:
This book isn't a life altering, mind boggling read. In fact it's actually a fairly simple teen love story. Don't let this simplicity fool you though because this book is beyond a fun read. I was literally laughing out loud as I read this book because the things that happen to Anna are hilarious without being completely outrageous. In fact, most of her problems and issues are very relatable. That's one of the things that I tend to dislike about some young adult books, the fact that they can take a situation and blow it completely out of proportion for dramatic effect. I firmly believe that the best stories out there are ones in which the reader can legitimately see themselves reacting in the same manor as the lead character in the book.
Overall, I think Anna and the French Kiss is a total must read for Spring Break. I seriously think you'll love the story because it's too fun and cute not to. Do you think you'll be picking this book up over break? Let me knwo what you think if you read it!

Inspiration Wednesday: Elizabeth Taylor: The Girl with the Violet Eyes

"I believe in mind over matter and doing anything you set your mind on."
-Elizabeth Taylor

Today's post is dedicated to an amazing woman who has passed away today, Elizabeth Taylor. She was a confident person that did her own thing in pursuit of happiness. She knew who she was and she didn't apologize for it. Her confidence and determination in life is the inspiration we want to take away today. As she recently said "You are who you are. All you can do in this world is help others to be who they are and better themselves and those around them."

RIP Elizabeth Taylor....

Must Read Monday: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

I was a little wary when I picked up this book. Why you ask? Well because I have a horrible habit of picking up books based on how much I like the cover. I normally try to not let my unbreakable habit get the best of me but sometimes I just can't fight it. This habit that sadly I cannot break has led me to quite a few duds in the literary world. Every once in a while, though, I am pleasantly surprised. That's the case with Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. You have to admit that the image on the cover is definitely eye catching. The thing is the story is just as enrapturing as the cover. We've all seen our share of vampires and werewolves and now I guarantee you that its all about the fallen angels.

This story is about Patch and Nora. Nora is a high school student. She's fairly quiet and isn't a troublemaker. She lives on her own with her mom in a fairly old and creepy house. Her father passed away and that had a big impact on her life. Boys from her class don't really catch her eye, that is until the new student, Patch, arrives. He is the quintessential bad boy. She doesn't understand why he makes her feel the way he does and why he doesn't seem to like her. The thing is that even though she thinks that he can't stand her, he seems to show up everywhere she is. Whenever he's around weird and scary things always seem to happen to her but she just can't stay away. Turns out that Patch is a fallen angel (as if you couldn't tell from the cover right?) who is trying to become human. I'll leave the finding out of how he plans to do this to you.

Overall, this book was an easy read. I really needed to follow up my previous book with something a little less intense. This book was perfect. I loved the fact that Patch and Nora aren't the quintessential couple. I mean for the most part, even though Nora thinks Patch is cute, they don't get along at all. The majority of the book focuses on who Patch is and why he's come into Nora's world. If you are into mysteries then this book is perfect.  I definitely recommend this book for Spring Break. It won't take too long too finish and it will definitely keep you entertained.

What do you think, are Angels the next big thing? Any books you think we should read next?

Prom Dresses by Color: Black Prom Dresses

A prom dress is one of the most important dresses that a girl purchases. In fact, for the most part, a prom dress begins the lifelong relationship between girls and dresses. This is why that its no surprise that the prom dress chosen by most tends to be in the color that most women tend to be drawn to: black. Who doesn't know that in every girls' closet there is always or at least there should always be a LBD? You can thank Audrey Hepburn for the eternal love affair we'll have with an LBD.

I think for me this scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's is where I realized that a simple black dress can be more attention grabbing than any overly embellished dress could ever be. I also think that this is the reason that many girls choose to go for a black prom dress. The options available are infinite. Black prom dresses run the gamut in price and style. There really is one for everyone. Black is one of the most flattering colors. It is slimming and it really does goes with every shape and skin color.

Take for example this long black prom dress. It is under $60 and the fact is that by just adding a few well placed accessories this dress can look way more expensive than $60.

This next black prom dress is simple but it is one of my favorite LBDs. I love the detail on the shoulder. That small detail makes it a little more special in my eyes.
This last black prom dress is one of our best sellers. Although it looks fairly simple, once you turn around the dress is simply amazing. The detail on the train catches the light in such a magical and it really does help you sparkle.

What do you think? Will you be starting your relationship with the LBD for your prom?

Inspiration Wednesday: Clarissa Explains It All

The inspiration from today’s post is coming to us straight from the 90s. It was just announced that a cult favorite for many people is returning to TV (along with some other nostalgia inducing shows). “Clarissa Explains It All” was to many people the iCarly of its day. In fact, if I can be so bold, I think that this show was actually one of the shows that kind of paved the way for teen stars like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Debby Ryan. Clarissa Darling was the coolest girl. She was one of those girls that can look totally amazing while also looking like she threw things on. While we definitely don’t want to recreate her outfits exactly, we still want to maintain the Clarissa Darling essence.

The main requirement for a “Clarissa-Approved” outfit is layering. Throw things together that you wouldn't normally do, like denim shorts and tights. You also have to remember to have fun with your outfit and use fun and bright colors.
Our first outfit is totally casual and fun. We added the quintessential leather jacket, a bright printed top and of course some tights and shorts.
Jacket: $34.90 Top: $16.90 Shorts: $26.90 Tights: $8.90 Shoes: $14.90 Watch: $16.90

Our second outfit is perfect for lounging around the house with your bff. The leather jacket is a staple of Clarissa's (along with her Docs). This top has a fun print and the legging shorts complete the look. We added a fun hat and a bright red leather belt because it wouldn't be a Clarissa outfit without color.

Jacket: $34.90 Top: $29.90 Shorts: $5.90 Belt: $12.90 Shoes: $14.90 Hat: $12.90
Our last outfit is for a casual night out. That's the thing about Clarissa's outfits, no matter what she's doing she always dresses for fun and for comfort. We mixed a bright top and bright printed skirt and added the much needed headband and floral cuff and we finished it off with a brown fitted faux leather jacket.
Jacket: $34.90 Skirt: $24.90 Top: $26.90 Headband: $8.90 Cuff: $10.90 Shoes: $14.90
What do you think? Do our outfits meet the Clarissa criteria for the 2011 crowd?

Must Read Monday: TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY by Jay Asher

If you're lucky, in life, you come across a few books that really get to you. By get to you, I don't mean that you cry or laugh when you're reading. I mean that even after you put it down the book stays with you. It gets you thinking of yourself in terms of the subject matter of the book. Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher is just that type of book. Beware this review is a tad on the long side and the subject matter is definitely serious.

I'll start by being perfectly honest, I picked this book up because I heard that Selena Gomez is going to be a part of the movie. I think she is such a great role model and I've loved Wizard's of Waverly Place for-ever! She is so funny in the role of Alex. That's why when I heard she was going to be a part of this movie I looked up the book and was beyond surprised that she would be involved in something so serious. Its not that I don't think she can do, in fact, I think this is the movie that might solidify her as a bonafide Hollywood actress and break her out of her "Alex" character's shadow.

When I first read the summary of the book I thought "There's no way that this is a young adult book! Why would people encourage kids to read about suicide?" I bought it anyway thinking if its a book meant for teens there will be some type of filter. I was totally wrong about that and I am so glad I was.
Thirteen Reasons Why is a book in which you know the ending at the beginning. The things you don't know are what led to the horrible outcome. The book is told from two different points of view,Clay's and Hannah's. Hannah is a high school girl who has committed suicide. Prior to killing herself, Hannah records the 13 reasons that led to her death and sends them to the people she feels are responsible for this tragedy. Clay is one of the people that receives the tapes. You are "listening" to the tapes at the same time as he is. The tapes are sent by Hannah to the first person and that person, after listening to the tapes, mails them out to the second person and so on. I will leave the summary of the story there because I don't want to give away any spoilers because I really think that this book needs to be read.

I finished the book in a few hours. If you pick it up I think you will too. I think the thing that struck me the most about this book is the fact that everyone can relate to it. If you are a teen, you can point out times in your life where you either did something seemingly harmless or you failed to stand up for someone being victimized. The thing about each of the events that led to Hannah's ultimate demise is that most of them seemed so simple in and of themselves but together they created what the author so perfectly calls "the snowball effect."  We've all heard the saying "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. "That is the most untrue saying ever uttered in  my opinion. Words hurt and they stick with a person long after they're said. That is the point Hannah is trying to make. There is no happy ending to her story but there is a very powerful message; her death could have been avoided.

The primary message I got from this book is best summed up in this quote: "No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same." In the end, we all play some part in the lives of the people that are around us whether we are aware of it or not. We need to realize this fact and feel accountable about what we say and do because our words may have bigger repercussions than we ever dreamed of.
Please know that there is help out there for people who have ever thought about suicide. You can get help by going to this site: or by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Have you read this book? What are your thoughts?

Inspiration Wednesday

We've been dreaming of summer in the office all week long. When we first came across this image we were jealous. Once that jealousy subsided we couldn't help but love her look. It is exactly the look we picture when we think of summer. So of course we had to recreate this look using some of our newest arrivals.
Now while we love her look we can't exactly wear the short shorts anywhere but to the pool or the beach so we had to replace them with our cute striped mini.  We changed up the chunky sweater top for a more flowy and light shawl-like top and cami. The jelly sandals are perfect because they have a little something special that only add to the outfit without being too loud. A summer outfit wouldn't be complete without a fedora and cute nautical inspired tote and of course the pop of red comes through on our toes. The nail polish is the perfect accent to the clear sandals don't you think?

Sweater: $26.90 Tank: $6.90 Skirt: $22.90 Sandals: $14.90 Fedora: $12.90 Bag: $32.90 Nail Polish: $2.90
Is this outfit a good summer look? What are you dreaming of wearing this summer?

Trend Spotting: Birds of a Feather

Spring is in the air (yippee and finally!). Feathers, as you’ve probably seen, well, everywhere are looking to be beyond huge. Don’t get me wrong, I love a trend as much as the next girl but feathers are sometimes are little scary for me. Feathers are one of the things that can be slightly intimidating. Done correctly this trend can add a little bohemian flare to your style. Done wrong and you risk looking like poultry.

The key to using this trend the right way is subtlety. Feathers are such a statement piece in and of themselves so a simple piece can really make an outfit. I love the way that Sydney from The Daybook used these feather earrings to add a little something fun to her outfit. This look is perfect for class or a casual Friday in the office.
The color on these earrings is perfect but if you are looking for something a little more dramatic then you can always add a black or silver pair of earrings.

Silver Earrings: $8.90  Peach Earrings: $8.90 Black Earrings: $8.90

The fun thing about feather is that aside from giving you a boho feel, they can also give you a luxe look. Our white feather prom dress is the perfect example.

Jessica Alba wore a similar style to her movie premiere recently and she let the dress be the focus point of the look. She kept the accessories simple because the statement piece was the dress.
The last way we’ve seen the feather trend pop up is on girls’ hair. I have to say that normally I wouldn’t think this would be a fashion do but after taking a gander at Emily's hair from the Daily E.Day blog I am obsessed.

What do you think of the feather trend? Is it something you want to try out?

Must Read Monday: Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Last week I reviewed The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. As you could probably tell, I L-O-V-E-D it! It seriously is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. So it should come as no surprise that this week I am reviewing the last two books in the trilogy. I know what you’re thinking, why are you reviewing 2 books instead of 1?

Well the answer to that is simple my friend, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to Katniss and Peeta. I really think that you should just buy the book set. Seriously, I read both books in like two days. I guarantee you that you’ll be kicking yourself if you only get one of the books because you’ll be dying to know how the story ends.

Ok, giddy rave over. Now on to the actual review which will be a little hard because I don’t want to give away any spoilers in case you are still reading the first book, so I’ll do my very best.

Since most, if not all of you, already know this is a trilogy I think that I’m safe in assuming that you guys know that Katniss and Peeta both survive in the first book right? In Catching Fire, both Peeta and Katniss have made it out of The Hunger Games (I’ll let you find out how they managed that on your own). Just when you start to think that they are safe the Capitol throws them for a loop and they have to back into The Hunger Games. This, as you can probably guess, is not normal for winners. There’s action, a love triangle and a whole lot of surprises that will keep you turning the pages. Since this is the second book in a trilogy you can probably guess that this book will leave you on a total cliffhanger. This cliffhanger will totally have you running to the last book in the trilogy.

Mockingjay is the last book and it definitely ties up all the loose ends. Beware you are in for a nail biter. The third book has a lot of action. It delves deeper into Katniss’s role in the society as the Mockingjay. This book has a great message because, although this series is set in the future, it still managers to show you that one person can make a difference so long as they choose to take a stand. While this series focuses a lot on physically fighting for change, I think that its main goal is not to create violence but to show where violence can lead, even if the violence seems justified. At the end of the day all of the changes that happen in the Katniss’s world are not because of the violence of the games but because of the love that Katniss had for her sister Prim. It was this love and not the violence that changed how her society lived and that is such a great message don’t you think?

On a side note, I am so excited that they are making these books into a movie! I just hope that they stay true to the books. Have you read any of these books? What do you think?

Inspiration Wednesday:

Last week we mentioned that we can find fashion inspiration anywhere. We used a Spring scene toshow you what we meant. This week we're taking our inspiration from a super cute fashionista, Lini, we spotted on

We just love the pop of color that she brought to an otherwise muted atmosphere. While her pop of color came from a chunky scarf, we brought our color through our finger tips with some bright red nail polish. We remixed her color palette to make an outfit that we think is perfect for class.

Since California has been suffering an identity crisis when it comes to the weather we switched the dress/tight combo for a cute printed top and blazer and some black jeggings to avoid any accidental skirt flyaways (trust me, I've been through it and having a skirt fly above your waist moment is NOT fun). The oversized bag is perfect to carry all your school stuff and the ring ties in with the turquoise/sage color of the spots on the cute top. We added a ruffly scarf to keep us warm and while you'd think that ruffle upon ruffle combo wouldn't work, it actually does.

Blazer: $44.90 Top: $22.90 Jeggings: $39.90 Scarf: $12.90 Bag: $32.90 Shoes: $14.90 Polish: $2.90 Ring: $8.90

What do you think? Do you see Lini's style coming through our outfit?

Get the Oscar Look: Reese Witherspoon

There were more than a few actresses at this year's Oscars that just wowed us. One of the things that we love doing is recreating an Oscar worthy look with having to spend like a celebrity. For Prom 2011 Reese Witherspoon's look is likely to be a popular one. It's such a simple and effortless look but still it doesn't fail to make her look stunning. Her Giorgio Armani Prive dress was flawless but unfortunately the price tag on that dress is anything but.

Our look will make you look just as stunning without having to break the bank. Our black prom dress with a white trim is eerily similar to Reese's. Our favorite part of this dress, though, is the bow on the back. We think this adds a little something special to the look don't you think? We added a few prom accessories to complete the look. What do you think? Does this look similar to Reese's look?

Long black prom dress: $144.90 Earrings: $10.90 Ring: $8.90 Rhinestone Bracelet: $12.90 Black Bracelet: $8.90 Clutch: $19.90 Shoes: $34.90
